Hoffa Applauds Move to Repeal NAFTA

Posted On: Mar 05, 2010 (21:31:19)

Teamsters Leader Says It's Time to Bail out of a Bad Deal

Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa praised today's announcement that a bipartisan bill to repeal the North American Free Trade Agreement has been introduced in the House of Representatives.

The bill is aimed at stimulating investment and employment in manufacturing, which has lost nearly a third of its workers since NAFTA was approved in 1993. The bill repeals the approval of NAFTA and instructs the President to notify Canada and Mexico of the U.S. withdrawal from the treaty.

"The lives of average workers in Mexico and in the U.S. have gotten so much worse since NAFTA," Hoffa said. "When you realize you've made a bad deal, you try to get out of it."

"We were sold a bill of goods about NAFTA," Hoffa said. "We were told it would create export jobs because they were dying to buy our refrigerators, they were dying to buy our cars. None of that happened. Instead we lost nearly 600,000 manufacturing jobs. Our $1.7 billion trade surplus with Mexico in 1993 turned into a $64.7 billion deficit in 2008.

"Nobody ever said the idea of NAFTA was for American corporations to move out of America, go across the Rio Grande and build a factory, exploit the Mexican workers and then ship cars and refrigerators back here to sell," Hoffa said. "Now it's obvious to most people that that's what it was all about."

Hoffa thanked the bill's co-sponsors, Democratic Reps. Gene Taylor of Mississippi, Peter DeFazio of Oregon, Bart Stupak and Dale Kildee of Michigan, Michael Arcuri of New York, Joe Baca and Bob Filner of California, Raul Grijalva of Arizona, Steve Kagen of Wisconsin, Marcy Kaptur of Ohio, Mike Michaud of Maine and Peter Visclosky of Indiana; and Republican Reps. Walter Jones of North Carolina and Roscoe Bartlett of Maryland.

FedEx workers Join the Teamsters Union

Updated On: Feb 17, 2010 (13:36:00)

Toronto, February 16, 2010 - Thanks to the relentless efforts of its organizers, the Teamsters Union
announces that it now represents Fed Ex's 48 adm
inistrative workers in Mississausa, Ontario.

"This is a historical event for FedEx workers and the entire labour movement," claims Robert Bouvier,
president of Teamsters Canada. ''This company is well known for its anti-union attitude, but this development
demonstrates beyond all doubt that these workers had had enough of their employer
's arbitrary decisions."

This large-scale campaign began in 2009 and mobilizes dozens of organizers, members of several Local
Un
ions throughout the country as well as Teamsters Canada representatives.

The application for certification was filed on Friday, February 12 with the Canada Industrial Relations Board
(CIRB). An application for certification is a formal document that confirms that a union represents a group of
workers
.

The employer may attempt to object to its workers' decision. The president of Teamsters Canada has
therefore warned them that the
ir employer could try to stall the procedure.

'We will continue to stand with these men and women for as long as it takes," adds Mr. Bouvier. "Furthermore,
we have learned that they earn to up
$16,000 less than their brothers and sisters employed by Purolatar. That
is one of the many reasons that conv
inced them to contact us for help."

The Teamsters intends to continue to help all Fed Ex workers' legal right to form a union.

The Teamsters Union represents 125,000 members In Canada In all trades. The International Brotherhood of
Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, has 1.4 million members in North America.

YRCW Completes Bond Refinancing

Posted On: Feb 12, 2010 (10:16:54)

The announced financing removes YRCW’s final $70 million of bond obligations of the $550 million under its old notes. The vast majority of those obligations were exchanged for equity in the in the debt for equity exchange that concluded on Dec. 31, 2009.

“Our members have shown their commitment to this company time and time again,” said Tyson Johnson Teamsters National Freight Director. “Nobody has more skin in the game than these Teamsters at YRCW.  Our members’ sacrifices – more than $2 billion worth – led the way for the financial restructuring and are the main reason the company is still in business today. Our members’ commitment to their customers and providing the best service in the industry will be the reason YRCW stays in business.

“Now that all the major components of the financial restructuring are completed YRCW can focus on its operations. We can focus on getting more freight in the system and providing the best service to our customers. The union is committed to working with the company on further operational improvements, which will ultimately lead to a stronger company, growth and additional jobs. I ask that all YRCW Teamsters at the local and national level support these efforts,” Johnson said.
